Precision Aluminum CNC Turning: Design for Manufacturability

CNCALPARTS specializes exclusively in custom aluminum CNC machining. Based in Shenzhen, we provide precision milling and turning services for engineers and procurement managers who require consistent quality for aluminum housings, enclosures, and structural components.

We do not process steel, brass, or plastics. By focusing entirely on aluminum, we have optimized our tooling, chip evacuation, and thermal management specifically for 6061, 7075, and other aluminum alloys.

Engineering Guide: Optimizing Aluminum CNC Turning

Proper design choices significantly impact the cost, cycle time, and dimensional stability of your aluminum turned parts. When designing for our turning centers, consider these mechanical factors.

01

Aspect Ratio and Long-Shaft Turning

Aluminum is prone to vibration (chatter) when the length-to-diameter ratio exceeds 6:1. For parts requiring higher ratios, we recommend designing in stepped diameters or providing support features to maintain ±0.01 mm tolerances.

02

Wall Thickness and Thin-Walled Features

While we can achieve thin walls down to 0.5 mm, internal stress in aluminum can cause deformation during the turning process. To maintain flatness and circularity, avoid aggressive wall reduction in a single pass. If your design requires very thin walls, we utilize specialized workholding to minimize radial pressure.

03

Internal Bores and Radii

Sharp internal corners are difficult to achieve in CNC turning. We recommend adding a small radius (0.2 mm to 0.5 mm) at the base of internal shoulders. This reduces stress concentrations on cutting inserts and improves tool longevity.

04

Threading and Tolerances

We support standard metric threads down to M1.6. For high-precision assemblies, specify your thread fits clearly. Our turning centers hold tolerances down to ±0.01 mm, but remember that anodizing adds a layer of buildup (typically 0.005–0.02 mm), which must be accounted for in your thread design.

Our Turning Capabilities

We operate precision turning and turn-mill centers capable of handling complex geometries beyond simple cylindrical shapes.

Why Focus Exclusively on Aluminum?

General machine shops often struggle with the cross-contamination of chips and the varying thermal expansion rates of different metals. By machining only aluminum, we ensure the following.

Process Stability

Our cutting parameters are tuned specifically for the heat conductivity of aluminum.

Cleanliness

No risk of ferrous metal particles embedding into your aluminum surfaces, which ensures better anodizing results.

Expertise

Our team is trained to manage the specific deformation characteristics of aluminum alloys during high-speed machining.

Surface Finishing for Turned Parts

The finish of your part is as important as its dimensions. We offer a range of finishing options to match function and appearance.

  • As Machined

Standard finish with no secondary processing.

  • Bead Blasting

Provides a uniform, matte appearance that masks tool marks.

  • Anodizing

Clear, black, or color options. Crucial for corrosion resistance and surface hardness.

  • Hard Anodizing

For applications requiring high wear resistance.

Quality Assurance

We verify every batch using CMM inspection, micrometers, thread gauges, and surface roughness testers. Every production run is accompanied by a Dimensional Inspection Report or a First Article Inspection (FAI) report upon request. We prioritize clear communication regarding your critical dimensions and tolerance stack-ups.

Prototype to Production

Whether you are developing a prototype for a new robotics assembly or scaling up a batch of 500+ housings, CNCALPARTS provides the same level of engineering rigor. We support file formats including STEP, STP, SLDPRT, and IGES to ensure your design intent is perfectly translated into the final machined part.
