Mechanical Finishes for Aluminum CNC Parts

CNCALPARTS is a Shenzhen-based precision CNC machining partner dedicated exclusively to custom aluminum parts. This guide covers the mechanical finishing options we apply to aluminum components — from as-machined surfaces to bead blasting, brushing, polishing, and tumbling — and how each one affects appearance, function, and downstream anodizing.

Finishing at a Glance

  • As Machined — natural CNC surface for functional parts.
  • Bead Blasting — uniform matte texture, ideal before anodizing.
  • Brushing — directional satin lines for cosmetic housings.
  • Polishing — refined, low-roughness reflective surfaces.
  • Tumbling — edge rounding and deburring for repeat production.

Why mechanical finishing matters on aluminum parts

Mechanical finishing is the step that turns a machined aluminum component into a finished part. It influences appearance, corrosion behavior, wear resistance, edge quality, and how consistently an anodized layer will read across a batch.

Because aluminum is our only material focus, CNCALPARTS controls cutting parameters, chip evacuation, workholding, and heat with finishing in mind from the first operation. Thin walls, deep pockets, and cosmetic faces are planned around the finish the part must achieve — not corrected afterward.

The articles below explain each mechanical finish we offer, when to specify it, and how it interacts with tolerances, anodizing preparation, and repeat production.

01

Aluminum-Only Experience

One material category, one set of cutting strategies. We refine tooling, speeds, and workholding around aluminum grades 6061, 7075, 6082, 2024, 5052, and 5083.

02

Finish-Ready Machining

Cosmetic faces, edge breaks, and anodizing allowances are built into the process plan, so bead blasting, brushing, or polishing lands predictably on the final part.

03

Prototype to Production

From 1–10 piece prototypes to 500+ piece batch production, surface finish and inspection criteria stay consistent across every run.

04

Inspection & Documentation

CMM, height gauges, micrometers, calipers, and surface roughness testers support dimensional inspection reports and first article reports on request.

05

Complex Geometries

3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis milling plus turn-mill machining handle housings, heat sinks, brackets, manifolds, optical mounts, and thin-wall parts.

06

Engineered Communication

Send STEP/STP models with PDF drawings and we review tolerances, critical dimensions, and surface requirements before machining begins.

Surface & Finish Control

Built around one material: aluminum

Aluminum machining requires careful control of cutting conditions, chip evacuation, workholding, heat, and deformation. Thin walls can distort, large pockets can release internal stress, and cosmetic parts require careful handling throughout.

Because aluminum is our only material focus, these are the manufacturing challenges we work with every day — and the reason our mechanical finishes stay repeatable from prototype through batch production.
